When the shortest day of the year arises on the calendar it is an opportunity to step out of the hustle bustle of commercialism and take the moments to connect to Earth and the cycles of our lives. Whether you do the following ceremony and practices alone or with others it commemorates the time and gives a sacred marker to our lives. And inviting others of nearly any age to share also adds to honoring this time of the year.
Why is the Solstice an Important Marker
The solstice is often the marker of inner connection and is marked by lighting a candle or a circle of candles, signifying the great journey around the sun from year to year, and our sacred spirals of our lives. In the tradition of the sacred circle and spiral of the Earth around the sun, the solstice is considered the Circle of Light.
Joining in the Circle of Light is a way to create a new connection that is not associated with any religion.
The Circle of Light reminds us we all live under the same sun and as we connect through this ceremony we are also connecting to the sacred fire in our hearts in balance. Once you have stepped inside the circle of candles, have everyone stand in a circle when others are joining you. The next step is to share gratitude in a Gratitude Round starting at number 1.
The following are the five gratitude rounds. Each person in the circle takes their turn to speak out loud their gratitude until you have gone from number 1 through number 5 on the Solstice, December 21 (or other day you have selected). Here is the process. Say, “I am grateful for ___________ .” (and then you fill in your answer).
Here are the five different areas.
- What are you grateful for and appreciate about the natural world around you that is not a creature but about nature the elements and plants, above the Earth, on the Earth or below the Earth. (Example, “I am grateful for _the sun’s light__________ .”).
- What creature are you grateful for in the world? This can be an insect, mammal, fish, bird, or amphibian. And you can say why. (all of these gratitudes are fun to do with children, too). (Example, “I am grateful for _the all the birds, their songs and presence_ .”).
- What person alive or in history are you grateful for? And why?
- What lesson that occurred for you this last year are you grateful for? And why?
- How are you grateful for yourself?
Additional challenging gratitude’s that can be added are
- How are you grateful for moving deeper to your personal commitment to support yourself and spiritual growth and development? What is the next step for you? I am grateful for ________________(fill in with your statement).
- Another example is, “I am grateful for taking this risk to do something new”, (examples are step back and restore, learn something new, travel, meet a new person, volunteer, work on your blind side, ziplining). An example could be as simple as a commitment to have gratitude for a new behavior like, I am grateful for stepping outside each evening and noticing the night sky, the clouds, the moisture, the darkness, the wind, the cold.
- The last challenging gratitude is how are you grateful for a life lesson that you are ready to release by stating it now (this could be something like, I am grateful for becoming receptive to observing when I am trying to be in control, taking a breath, and instead allowing my intuitive higher guidance to show me the way).
Speaking gratitude out loud whether we are alone or with others contributes to our transformation and our energy. The gratitude rounds are the second uplifting vibrational changes. These gratitude rounds can also be done at other times of the year. The more your practice the more you are able to see gratitude and speak being grateful to others. Speaking gratitude and appreciation does not interfere with doing the work we know needs to be done in the world.
The third method for engaging with transformational frequencies is the labyrinth as a sacred formation that transcends the ordinary. It is an ancient vibrational pattern that resonates within the person walking the labyrinth as a cymatic experience that takes the walker out of time. (Cymatics is the study of how sound, light, or other stimuli can create patterns of visible shapes on a surface).
An additional activity to do at the Solstice as well as other times of the year is to walk a labyrinth. We can consider the walk of the labyrinth as an opportunity to reprogram our story through the walk to the center and out as both kinesthetic and introspective experiences and as a complete mind, body, and spirit integrative activity. There is no need for thought but to trust to follow the path because it takes you inward and out again. And, the walk is an interruption in our lives and gives meaning for deepening our understanding. Even beyond this, there is plenty of research of how the labyrinth is useful for developing a relationship with meditative experiences that does not require sitting still and is also beneficial for anxiety, addictions, centering, and connecting to the Relaxation Response which diminishes stress and cortisol production and increases resilience and inner strength, creativity, healing and the production of dopamine and serotonin the characteristics of our evolution.
The labyrinth, unlike a maze which is designed to take you to dead ends with tricks, is found around the world in disparate countries often at least over 4,000 years old from Africa, Crete, Denmark, Scandinavia, Russia, the Hopi of Northern Arizona United States, and other locations and considered one of the most ancient symbols and tools for transformation.
A more recent spontaneous use of the labyrinth was during the post effects of the Indonesian tsunami in 2002. Independent of each other, on different continents, people either built labyrinths for others to walk or to walk themselves as an activity for sending their prayers to those who had passed, to address their connection to those who survived, to process the earth changes, and their grief.
Purposes of the Labyrinth
When we decide to engage in the journey of the labyrinth it is an opportunity to set the time inside on the path as separate from the rest of life. Often an intention and dedication is assigned to walking the labyrinth as a ritual and commemoration.
Other purposes of the labyrinth are
- To dedicate a walk to a person who has passed as a way to honor them.
- Turning over an issue or concern during the walk in the labyrinth gives a method to no longer take on the details and allow breath and space. Experiencing that feeling of release once is the key to re-connecting to the that same feeling again. Once we experience turning over an issue it become easier because we are familiar with how it feels.
- Intending to walk the labyrinth as a method of releasing and untangling the energy strands that have kept you stuck or blocks in an area of difficulty or challenge. (In this last method, when the walker reaches the center they symbolically release everything, knowing the walk out of the labyrinth is bringing in new energy and is a clearing).
- For inspiration as a method to tap into a new resource of awareness of energy found within the sacred form of the labyrinth.

Find a labyrinth near you. Most are free. Here is the link, Worldwide Labyrinth Locater https://labyrinthlocator.com/. Plan your day and time to walk the labyrinth and remember to notice your nighttime dreams before you go to walk the labyrinth and the following night afterwards.
Consider your walk in the labyrinth with reverence as a sacred journey. Notify your unconsciousness this journey is special and separate from every day by the reverence you bring walking the labyrinth and the following preparation.
When you go to walk the labyrinth turn your cell phone off. Bring a pen and notebook. Invite another person or others to take their walk in the labyrinth with you if that feels right. Do not speak while in the labyrinth, this is your time to notice.
For the walk in the labyrinth.
Before entering, invite into your labyrinth journey the reality of your spiritual connection to manifest.
If you wish, invite into your labyrinth journey the higher self of a person who is alive or not on the planet that offers a link with your unconscious as a bridge that is relevant for you at this time.
Notice what you notice as you walk and what thoughts, or feelings arise. Notice what is around you, are there disturbances, snippets of conversation (what are they?), what creatures do you notice? What are the colors and movements around you? Notice the air against your skin. Notice the clouds and sky and sounds or absence of them. When you get to the center take a deep breath and release. Are you inspired to look up into the sky, or move in a circle to see each direction and notice how you feel? Center in the center for as long as you wish. Connect to deep below your feet and high in the sky above you. Notice the four directions, North, South, East, and West. Take a deep breath. As you walk out, connecting to all the different ways seen and unseen, and all the five senses and intuitive senses of how you will be supported on the journey for the next year, fulfilling your purpose and filing your life with appreciation and contributing to creating positive energy and enjoyment for yourself, others, and Earth.
Besides the methods listed above about using the labyrinth, the following shares more about the power of the labyrinth.
Drawing upon the labyrinth as a separation from that which no longer serves us, or alternatively, walking the labyrinth to invite in new and different information and energy is going to a new threshold which is the journey for our new story. In either of the above scenarios the methods of using the labyrinth is to recognize there is something missing within. Thereby, the ambulation (walking the labyrinth in and out) is a state of seeking. Reaching the center of the labyrinth is (metaphorically) reaching our center; the time to re-create a new story that is processed during the return walk.
As a Seeker
As a seeker, the walker of the labyrinth is required to experience through all the five senses, intuitive senses, notice, and feel. Afterwards there is an interpretation of the experiences which is part of the process. Writing down the experience of the labyrinth from the beginning to the center and the outward walk till the end assists with the process. Then there is an interpretation of the labyrinth walk, which contributes to an alternate story that includes the new information and experience. Becoming open to and discussing alternative life stories that release the biases and messages we hold is another layer of the power of the journey of the labyrinth.
Reweaving the Next Chapter
Often walking a labyrinth at the Solstice, or other time of the year, allows us to unravel the challenges and reweave the beginnings of the next chapter. Whether you walk an indoor or outdoor labyrinth the ancient cymatic pattern of the labyrinth is a potent frequency that reweaves and transforms our energy.
